What Is Image Optimization

Image optimization is preparing images so they load quickly and display well in email clients. It includes choosing the right format, sizing images correctly, compressing them, and ensuring fallbacks exist when images are blocked. In email, optimization is especially important because clients often load images over the network at open time, and many recipients are on mobile connections.

What “Optimized” Means in Email

Optimized images balance quality and size. In practice, that often includes image compression to reduce file weight and improve performance. Image optimization also affects email load time because faster images make the entire email feel faster. The goal is not “smallest possible,” but “fast enough that the email is usable immediately.”

Handling Blocking and Accessibility

Some recipients and clients block images by default, which is why image blocking must be part of your design. Your email should still communicate value without images. Use meaningful alt text so recipients understand what is missing and can still take action. Avoid embedding critical CTA text inside images, and ensure key messages exist as real text in the template.

Practical Optimization Workflow

If you personalize images dynamically, ensure your image service returns cacheable assets and supports responsive sizing. Personalized images that are generated uniquely per recipient can increase load time and reduce caching benefits.

Start by exporting images at the size they will be displayed. Then compress and verify the result at common device widths. Use consistent naming and caching strategies so repeated assets do not require re-downloads. If you use a template library, keep a shared asset set with standardized sizes so teams do not introduce random oversized images. Test a few representative emails on mobile networks to validate that the experience is still fast.
